Of family memories
Is like the seashells along the shore
That I gathered
On long ago summer days.
In rounded shells
Can I recall the warm softness
Of my wee babes
Cradled against my breast.
The gashes in my heart
From sorrowful goodbyes
To suffering loved ones
Are like the sharp edged shells
That cut into my palm.
I’m reminded of life's difficulties
By cracked and broken shells,
Storm tossed and beaten
By wind driven waves.
Recollection of laughter and conversation
Of past family and present
Around the dinner table
Is comparable to the roar
Heard from within the conch.
Remembrance of comfort and love
In family ties
Is like shells, nested together.
In my mind’s eye,
The scattering of the family
To places far and wide
Is like the reaching out
Of the arms of the starfish.
In reflection, each shell
In my collection of family memories
Is beautiful with the creativity
And forever goodness of God.
