His companion, the angle Micah, surveyed the gleaming buildings with their inhabitants scurrying here and there. “They don’t know that their sin has reached its fullness. El Roi, the God Who Sees, knows all that they have done.”
Josiah shook his head. “I spoke to Gabriel recently. He reports that the Lord grieves over the ones who are lost. He has demonstrated His love and forbearance for many years of their time on earth. Yet in this city all they do is mock Him.”
“Sodom and Gomorrah, how your sin cries out!” Micah pointed. Though the distance was great the eyes of the angels discerned a particular human. “That man. He has caused much distress throughout the land. The nation’s king who should care for and nourish his people. Instead he lies and deceives. He has the evil one strongly upon him. Is there no one who can turn him from his wicked ways?”
“Many have tried, but his pride blinds him. The Lord commissioned me to raise up a man to rebuke this king.” Josiah lowered his head in recollection. “A righteous man, he spoke again and again to the king. Alas, my hero was banished.”
Micah cupped his ear. “Listen to the outcry. The blood in the earth is upon this city. Its fate is sealed. Our God will certainly not relent now hearing the blood moan and wail.”
“Wait! Is this another who comes before the throne to petition for the city?” Josiah jumped up and strained to see.
“Yes, what a brave soul, or is he a fool? He knows the Lord God is resolute. He has made up His mind. Despite that, this man begs for every sinful life.” Micah bit his lip. “This is the most amazing conversation.”
“He asks if there are but fifty righteous men in the entire city whether God Almighty will spare it.” Josiah’s eyes widened. “Is it possible? The Lord of All Creation has said yes.”
“My goodness, the man hasn’t stopped there. What a heart for even those doomed to destruction.” Micah clapped his hands. “He asks for forty-five, then forty, now thirty! How much will he push this? Unbelievable. The Chief Shepherd has agreed to twenty, now ten. What chutzpah this man has! There, he has finally stopped.”
“Surely there must be ten men in this entire city who haven’t completely succumbed to the evil in their midst. We will see. The Just One has commanded: we are to do one final check.” Josiah took a single step and the buildings of the city rose up around him.
The angels walked the length and breadth of the city seeking those who worshiped in spirit and in truth. In every alley and street corner they called to the righteous knowing those who heard the voice of God would respond. They witnessed the sexual immorality and the horror of the blood as it shrieked in their ears. Millions of dead children sacrificed; all for convenience and mammon. The political machinations of those called to rule the nation disgusted the angels for the treachery they employed. So many had died at their hands that the stains couldn’t be washed away. The angels shuddered in the midst of the perversion.
Leering faces confronted them. Idols rose up at every turn. The Jezebel spirit was strong and oppressive. But somehow they found a few who didn’t bow down to Baal.
Josiah and Micah led them out of the city. Seeing the sin on every side they blinded these who had remained pure despite the depravity. When they’d come free from the bondage around them, the angels set them in a safe place.
“We found only three. Not even the ten the Lord required to keep Him from destroying the city. It would have had a reprieve, like Nineveh, if only that many could have been found.” A tear ran down Josiah’s cheek. “All humanity reaches this point. It’s only a matter of sooner or later. The Righteous Judge will eventually destroy all who rebel and disobey. Thank God for Jesus that He died so some might live. I mourn that the citizens here would scorn their only hope.”
As the angels left Washington, D.C. behind, hail, fire, and brimstone rained down upon the city.
