“Do you have any items of Gail’s that she knitted?” Carol asked me. She explained that Gail had participated in a prayer shawl ministry. She also made scarves and bookmarks, many of them intended for their church bazaar this month. In their absence Carol would be bringing Gail’s knitted items, as well as several items made by their mom, to the bazaar. “Before I do that though,” she said, “If you would like a scarf or shawl or bookmark to remember Gail by, you’re certainly welcome to choose one.”
Although Gail and I had been close in age and in friendship, we lost touch somewhat these last few years, and I had never received any of Gail’s knitted pieces. In fact I had only a vague awareness of her involvement in that ministry. It was an encouragement to me to know that although she is gone, her touch remains. Now I expressed to Carol that I would love to have one of her scarves, thinking it would feel like a warm hug.
Carol described the scarves to me. “If you want to think about it and let me know in a few days, that would be okay,” she said.
“No, I already know which one I want,” I replied. “The one you described as having the ‘hairy’ shimmery yarn sounds just right. It’s different, like Gail. She was different.”
Carol chuckled, “That’s great. I didn’t want to say this before you made your choice, but when I first opened the box and looked at these scarves, and thought you might like to have one…and I saw this one, I figured you would be the one to like it best!’”
As Carol and I spoke on the phone, our conversation covered more than knitted scarves. We spoke about missing these two women—about the marked void and the chill of death. It’s a chill that sinks deep into the soul. A scarf is no match for that kind of chill. The warmth of our Savior’s love melts that ice-cold grip, reassuring us that death has lost its sting. And that knitted scarf will serve as a reminder of my cousin’s commitment to Him.
