Unworthy, I felt, of Him.
But His boundless love, keeping me on track
Protected me, life and limb,
Kept me hanging in, gently holding me,
Far away from the brim.
“I'm a sinner,” I told him, ”Not good enough,”
He said, “You'll be made new.”
“Me, so selfish,dishonest?”; I expected rebuff.
“Can your great love break through?”
He asked of me, his presence so near,
“Who sees your every tear?”
“Yes, Lord, but I'm guilty, full of shame,
I know just what I deserve,”
“But I give grace,” He said, "I took the blame.
Please accept this without reserve.”
”You must trust me,” He said, “my forgiveness is sweet;
Your salvation will be complete.”
So, His love won me over; I knelt at His feet,
Seeking forgiveness from sin,
And his grace overcame me; my soul was replete.
My new life would begin.
He changed me; He turned my life around.
His blessings, so rich, abound.
I acknowledge that this is based on the beautiful poem, 'Love', by George Herbert (1593-1633), which I am including here, not for comparison (I don't claim to match his poetic genius in any way.) but because I used it as inspiration and it is one of my favorite poems. This poem is in the public domain.
Love
Love bade me welcome: yet my soul drew back,
Guilty of dust and sin.
But quick-eyed Love, observing me grow slack
From my first entrance in,
Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning
If I lacked anything.
“A guest," I answered, “worthy to be here”:
Love said, “You shall be he.”
“I, the unkind, ungrateful? Ah, my dear,
I cannot look on thee.”
Love took my hand, and smiling did reply,
“Who made the eyes but I?”
“Truth, Lord; but I have marred them; let my shame
Go where it doth deserve.”
“And know you not," says Love, “who bore the blame?”
“My dear, then I will serve.”
“You must sit down," says Love, “and taste my meat.”
So I did sit and eat.
