Had space that was ample enough—
A closet with plenty of room
For storing all manner of stuff.
My husband had purchased a padlock
He hung to the hasp on the door.
He put the small key in his pocket,
And afterward, deep in a drawer.
Our children, aged eight and eleven,
Adorable though they might be,
Were made up of fifty parts mischief
And fifty, curiosity.
We hoped that our new lock and key
Would conceal from their young prying eyes,
The presents we’d hidden inside
For a morning of Christmas surprise.
We used this spot year after year
With minds that were restfully sure
The toys we had placed out of sight,
From both of our kids were secure.
Delusions of safe keeping ended
One winter a couple years later,
When daughter then told on her brother,
Who’d acted as chief instigator.
Our son confessed picking the lock
To Father, who grimly advised,
“The morning of Christmas, my boy,
You’d best be completely surprised!”

God bless~
As for the poem itself, I felt it had a great pace and rhythm and projected the humorous tolerance I imagine was exhibited in real life.
Great job!
I remember searching for Christmas gifts but was never very successful.
...fifty parts mischief
And fifty, curiosity...
