Have I got news for you! You know how often I've teased you about becoming "old fashioned" when you and Tim moved from upstate New York to the wilderness of British Columbia, to live so simply that the only way I had left to communicate with my best friend forever was to write you a letter? Well, Rob and I have decided to be a little bit old fashioned ourselves. It's about our wedding!
You know we've been planning a "Destination Wedding." On a beach in Hawaii. We were so sure we wanted to do it, you know, maybe to keep up with "the Joneses." But we also thought it would be exotic and romantic, especially for the photographs. We even found a nice Christian minister there who could do our service.
Now here's the thing. No matter how many exciting plans we made, Rob and I kept questioning our decision, as if maybe there was something we were overlooking. A couple of things have now made the problem--and the solution--exceedingly clear. Last week, my Gram said she thinks she might be too old to jump on a jet plane and go to Hawaii for a wedding, even though she wants dearly to do it for me. Rob's brother decided to make the trip to be the best man, but alone, without his wife and children, because of the expense. Also, because of the expense, I was not yet sure who to ask to be my matron of honor. We talked to our pastor, who baptized me 25 years ago, and prayed with him about it. As we prayed, I began to realize that our wedding is so much bigger than just the two of us, a gorgeous beach in Hawaii, and the photographs to prove it. Exotic as it might be, I realize I would like to stay planted in my own native soil. Our wedding day is "our day" in the sense that it is our day to celebrate with those persons who have brought us to this moment in our lives, physically and spiritually, and in love and friendship.
After prayer, Rob and I looked at each other and said almost simultaneously, "Let's get married right here." We realized that what we would want to see in our wedding photos when we look at them 10, 20, 30 years from now would not be a faraway beach, the waves, and a sunset, but the familiar faces of the people we love, including those we have known like forever! So ... we are choosing the "old fashioned" way, and planning a simple wedding right here.
Now, here's the best part. With the money we save by having the wedding in my home church with our friends and relatives close by us, I can choose the matron of honor I want, and fly her and her family from the wilderness of British Columbia to upstate New York, and put them up in a lovely bed and breakfast for a week. Start packing, my friend!
