Must get up from cosy bed.
Children fed, husband off,
Running nose, barking cough.
Call the doctor, finds a fit,
Need someone to baby sit.
Friend arrives, in a rush,
Leave her feeding baby mush.
Doctor checks my throat and chest,
Tells me what I need is rest,
Tells me that I have the 'flu,
Tells me just what I must do.
'Viruses must run their course,
Recovery you cannot force,
Potions, pills will only fail,
Rest alone is of avail.
Drink a lot and go to bed.'
That is what the doctor said.
Little did he know the score,
Toddler, baby and one more.
Home I went and had a rest,
For my friend is just the best.
Snoozed awhile and fell asleep,
Didn't hear a single peep.
Then my friend just had to go,
Has commitments, yes I know.
Children grizzling, throat ablaze,
Getting dinner in a daze.
Husband enters, sports a frown.
'Let me finish.' Sits me down
Cooks the food, doles it out,
Tells the kids they're not to shout.
Sends me back to rest in bed,
Gives me tablets for my head.
Kids' pyjamas, teeth all done,
Baby changed and wanting fun.
Dad insists it's time for sleep.
He looks like a ruffled heap.
Carries children one by one,
They want stories, he wants none.
'Mom would let us, its not fair.'
Dad says 'No', with steely glare.
When at last the house is quiet,
Dad sits down to have his bite.
Family all at last asleep,
Silently I'm counting sheep.
Coughs and splutters punctuate,
Sleep eludes me though it's late.
Baby wakes, I rise to go,
Husband tells me to lie low.
Up he gets to tend the boy,
Bottle and a rattle toy.
Morning comes, I'm feeling bad,
Looking for more help from Dad.
Children up and baby yells.
Morning's whistles, morning's bells.
Husband groans, turns to me,
Croaks complaint of misery.
Burning throat, throbbing head,
He 'cannot get out of bed!'
So I rise, my rest is done,
Being Mom's not always fun.
Get them breakfast, dress them too.
Baby's done a massive poo!
One has got a runny nose,
Caught the 'flu bug I suppose.
Did I hear a cough just then?
Was it Kate or was it Ben?
What the doctor didn't know
Is that mothers can't lie low.
Rest prescribed is well and good,
If I could I surely would.
When chips are down and all are sick
Mom's as solid as a brick,
Keeps the family rolling on.
Never feeling put upon.
When the doctor orders rest,
Follow orders, do your best,
Use the telly, tried and true,
Let the kids crawl over you.
Take your rest just when you can,
If you're able, call on Gran.
Soon the 'flu will flee away.
You will live, the kids will play.
