TITLE: Scene From Upstage | Previous Challenge Entry

CHARACTERS: Four Heavenly Bodies (HBs) and five Earthly Bodies (EBs) intermix at random. Three HBs wear colorful bodysuits that distinguish them from each. Their names are Yellow, Blue and Red. The fourth HB is Black. The five EBs are in street clothes. Their names are Boy, Girl, Man, Woman and Dog.
ACTION: the EBs can’t see the HBs but sometimes they feel or hear them. The HBs silently mime activity such as reading alone or to each other or dancing in solo praise or to entertain each other. The Black HB lurks alone at the edges of the group.
SCENE 1
Enter HBs, Boy and Dog. Red, Blue Green and Yellow engage in activity. Boy plays with Dog and then curls up with Dog for a nap. Black threatens the sleeping boy. Dog growls.
Enter Girl. She sits downstage with a book.
Girl (reading aloud): “…Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all the living creatures of every kind on the earth.” Covenant, that’s a, um…
Yellow goes over, sits down by Girl and whispers in her ear.
Girl: a promise! I remember!
Enter Man and Woman
Man: You should have seen the way I flew that airplane through that storm. I couldn’t see a thing.
Woman: Weren’t you afraid you’d hit a mountain?
Man: Nah. I knew what I was doing.
Black moves over to Man and pats him on the back.
Woman: Didn’t you lose all sense of where you were? I’ve heard that happens. Isn’t that what happened to John Kennedy Junior?
Man: I knew exactly where I was.
Blue walks toward Man, shaking his head.
Woman: How could you be sure? I would have been praying up a blue streak!
Man: I couldn’t raise anyone on the radio, my wings were starting to ice up and I couldn’t see the runway. I banked left…
Man holds out his arms and pretends to be an airplane leaning to the left. Blue comes up behind him and adjusts his position to lean him to the right.
Man: I pushed the stick forward to get my air speed up.
Man does just the opposite. He pulls back and starts to stall. Blue adjusts his position.
Woman: And then what did you do?
Man: I broke through the clouds and landed it perfectly!
Man mimes landing a plan. Blue guides his movements.
Woman: Thank God you made it through that storm. Well, I have to go pick up my kids.
Exit Woman
Man begins to walk off in the opposite direction, still looking over his shoulder at the woman. Black curls up like a rock directly in Man’s path. Man is just about to trip over Black.
Red (loudly): Paul!
Man (Paul) sees Black and brings his hands to his heart.
Girl (reading her book): ” For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38, 39 KJV)
