Cradling DNA, an explosion of cells, would Mary cope
New life, confusion, questions and tears
God’s peace and assurance, quietened, stilled fears
A baby, Emmanuel, hidden so deep
Gentle swelling, whispers of gossip, did Mary weep
Bones knit to flesh, transparent, a heart that beat
Blood vessels formed, creation, tiny feet
Genetics defied, perfection, an intricate design
Delicate ears, starfish hands, eyes that would shine
Arduous journey, no room, a manger would suffice
Mary’s pain, a newborn king, come to pay a price
A shining star, beaming hope, shepherds gathered round
Filthy stable, ecstasy, the angels’ joyful sound
Eastern kings, exotic myrrh, frankincense and gold
Centuries on, they didn’t know, their story would be told
Outstanding gift, breathing, parcelled with skin
A sacrifice, unblemished lamb, payment for our sin
The Father’s best, His only son, sacrificial love
Salvation, grace and mercy, given from above
