A caller that I can’t ignore
A smart black suit with hollow smile
Beneath his arm a bulging file
“Your neighbours,” (Ah that nosey crew)
“Have all been watching what you do
It would appear you have no tree
Or Christmas lights that they can see
“There is no Santa or his sleigh
There are no snowmen on display
There are no angels on their wings
No stars or other Christmas things
“The Christmas Act - Section 2
Clearly states what you should do
Residents must clearly show
On their houses things that glow
“Flashing reindeer fit the bill
Candles on your window sill
Snowflakes falling will suffice
Father Christmas would be nice.”
“It’s just October,” I reply
“It’s far too early!” Loud, I sigh
“Another month or may be two
Then for sure these things I’ll do.”
He frowns, his eyes brows lift and drop
They jig around, and then they stop
He disapproves, that much I suss
I feel I’m making such a fuss
“You have one month - that’s thirty days
To deck your house in well-lit ways
Should you neglect to show your “art”
A hefty fine we will impart!”
He turns around, I watch him go
Where is that box? I just don’t know
In the attic, gath’ring dust?
Will I find it? Yes! I must!
Author’s note
One hopes that this will never be
How sad the signs are there to see
The shelves in stores, they overflow
With Christmas things that flash and glow

To deck your house in well-lit ways..." Very nice!
I actually DO know of neighborhoods like this. I once helped a friend play a joke on his friend by posing as someone from the neihborhood association. I actually said, "I'm from the Neighborhood Association and we wanted to inform you that your decorations are inadequate for the standard of this neighborhood." You should have seen the look on his face! It was funny...and a big joke! Cute poem!
