I feel myself sinking lower now- impossible to breathe. The unpleasantness I felt and tasted in the beginning are almost welcome. The fear of drowning all but disappears.
I knew better than to tread in these dark perilous waters. I had been warned many times of the dangers beneath the surface, but a lure I could not resist pulled me in. I waited until I was well out of sight of the nearest lifeguard of safety before wading out. The surface appeared calm and alluring.
Many had risked this surf and survived to tell of the unparalleled rush. A few advised me of the deception of the initial appearance.
I chose the many.
My demise is, however, my own doing. At first I blamed others for their deceit and influence, but now I realize the futility of faulting anyone else for my own stupidity.
Utter darkness enfolds me and exhaustion has absorbed all urge to fight.
Just as I am willing to accept my doom I see a faint glimmer above. I feel something press against my back- hands, now slipping beneath my shoulders.
The journey to the surface seems long, but as I finally break free I feel the impossible weight from this sea of sin flung from my weary spirit.
Wiping from my face the salty brine of tears I dare look up into the face of the lifeguard that resuscitated my soul - my Savior.
