Were talking one fine day.
Sizing up the other’s worth,
They both had much to say.
“Valley, you are lowly,”
The mountaintop did boom,
“And people tend to struggle
Through the shadows of your gloom.”
“It’s true you offer shade and rest
To travelers who wander
Through your forests and by your streams
Where lovers love to saunter.”
“But up here on my mountaintop
The godly seek their Lord.
They bask in all His glory
And their spirits are restored.”
“How can your worth compare with mine?”
The mountaintop did say.
“For here God’s children meet with Him
To worship, sing, and pray.”
What could the valley brag about
When God gave special grace
To those who met Him way up there
Upon that mountain face?
His voice was humble as he spoke,
“They travel far and wide
To have their souls and faith restored
And know He’s by their side.”
“But if they never journeyed through
The valley of despair,
They’d not ascend the heights of joy
Or see how much He cares.”
“They need my gloom to see His light.
They have to climb the slope
That leads up from my forest lands
To everlasting hope.”
“The Master made us both, you see.
Our differences were planned.
The ones up on the mountaintop
Eventually descend.”
“On their travels through my glades,
They witness to the lost
The sweetness of the love they’ve known
And how great was its cost.”
“Those same lost souls will venture forth
To reach up for His grace.
Then they, too, will climb the slopes
To see the Master’s face.”
