Jake finished pulling his work boots on and grabbed his hat. The fields needed to be checked after several days of relentless rain. The farm road would be drivable with his jeep, if he was extra cautious. Approaching the meandering stream that ran across his property, he decided to stop, and walk over for a closer look. Looking for loose branches, his eyes were focused on the flowing stream. He was taken by surprise when he felt the ground under his feet begin to give way and hold him fast. Quicksand! He began to fight a sense of panic as fear swept over him.
Although it was not likely that he would be pulled under completely, he was vulnerable to dehydration, heat, and perhaps a stray wild animal. As Jake gathered his senses he sent a prayer towards heaven. “Jesus, I need help. Calm my spirit, and please send someone my way to help me.” The words were hardly out of his mouth when he heard another jeep coming from the direction of his stables. Soon he was looking into the face of his right-hand man, Mike.
Jake began to relax as Mike reassured him, “we’ll have you out of there shortly. Let me get the board I keep in the jeep.”
Jake felt for the board Mike positioned behind him, as it created a bridge from the treacherous hole to more solid ground. Following Mike’s instructions he grasped the board with his hands, and leaned back. Having the added support, he was able to slowly wiggle his legs. The mire lost its grip and Jake was able to wiggle free. If he hadn’t been so muddy, he would have given his friend a bear hug.
Jake’s predicament reminds me so much of how sin can get a grip on us and hold us fast. If we try to help ourselves, we just get in deeper. David, the Psalmist, wrote about rescue from sin hundreds of years ago, “He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.” (Psalm 40:2 NIV)
When we become gripped by sin, we must admit we need a Savior, and call upon Jesus who is the only One who can rescue us from our sin. (1 Timothy 2:5 NIV) The Apostle Paul encouraged the Romans, “if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9 NIV)
Incidentally, I read that the best way to stay safe around quicksand is to avoid it. It is the same for sin. Avoid it in order to stay safe. Stay close to Jesus by reading God’s Word and talking to Him every day.
