“Did you hear what the human did to me?” Miss Broody clucked at Jewel. “That two-legged, pole-armed, ruthless monster came in, stuffed her grubby hand under me, and stole my precious, beloved egg that I was saving to hatch! Even more, she gave me that stupid, dirty, fake, ceramic dummy egg to replace it! How despicable!”
Jewel huffed. “That human, I tell you, she is always disrupting nature. Can’t she see that a hen needs to hatch eggs now and then to raise more chickens for the future? ‘Be fruitful, and multiply,’ the Creator told us so long ago.”
Blondy strutted up, hearing the commotion, and joined in. “Do those silly human really think that we are foolish enough to mistake those fake eggs for a real one? Would we accept a lifeless, cold hunk of ceramic instead of those eggs, which are bursting with life and potential, waiting to hatch into a new chick? Maybe people are that dumb, but we know the difference.”
Soon the whole flock was congregated, clucking up a storm around Miss Broody, as they all complained about the folly of man. They were about ready to go on the warpath when Goldy appeared. Now this hen was well respected by all the flock. Not that they always paid her much heed, but she somehow had a way of always calming them down when they were losing their heads over some trivial matter.
“You know, I wonder if that is how Paul felt when he heard that the church was listening to fake gospels instead of the truth of God’s Word. Those silly people at Galatia, they were so easily snared away into the grasp of the raccoon. Paul was horrified that the people so readily exchanged to precious, pure gospel of Jesus for a fake, filthy lie.”
Sweety cocked her little head in thought. “I think I heard the little human say something about changing the un-cluckable glory into a cluckable one?”
“I think that was from Paul’s other letter. ‘Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.’ (Romans 1:22-23 KJV) That’s, uncorruptible, not un-cluckable. There, he was talking about heathens, but sadly, the Christians fell into the same traps sometimes.”
“There is a reason why the Bible calls people sheep.” Jewel muttered under her breath.
“Yeah, but back to Galatia, Paul had some pretty harsh words to say for those people who accepted the counterfeit so easily. (Gal 1:6-8 KJV) ‘I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.’”
Sweety perked up her head. “Wow. That is harsh. Paul must have been pretty mad.”
“Yeah, madder than a wet hen!” cackled Jewel.
“How about, madder than a hen who just got her eggs stolen and replaced with a ceramic dummy!” growled Miss Broody. “Although, I don’t see how anyone could be madder than that. How insulting. What do they think I am? A feather duster?”
“Either that or a bean brain” Sweety chimed in.
“Well… Our brains are about the size of peas…” Goldy turned towards the bushes.
“Yeah, but we use our brains, what brains the Creator has granted us!” Jewel asserted, eyes flaring, and hackles raised.
Miss Broody sighed. “Well, I guess there’s nothing to do but start a new clutch. I guess I’ll go see what eggs I can find laying around.”
“Hey! Don’t you steal my egg!” clucked Jewel as she raced Miss Broody to the hen house.
