I didn’t know
you were going to leave.
One day okay,
by the next you’d gone,
and I’m left to grieve.

When I heard the words
you had passed away,
I was stunned,
and I remain
shocked to this day.

I still feel the jolt
of the way that you left.
No warning at all.
I’m utterly,
deeply bereft.

There’s no such thing
to really prepare
for someone to pass,
and yet it helps
to be warned, aware.

You didn’t suffer.
It’s such a relief.
Still, it’s so hard,
solely from
a point of grief.

It matters not
how hard I try.
I can’t accept
I didn’t get
to say goodbye.

The day will come
when I’ll see you again.
Still, there’s nothing.
My world’s empty
from now ‘til then.

I didn’t know
you were going to leave.
But leave you did,
it was your time,
and I’m left to grieve.
