The long grass surrounds me, keeping me hidden from the adjoining world. The blades wave in a gentle dance with the breeze to music heard only with the heart. Crickets sing their lullabies, an owl greets the night, and a coyote on a far-off hill announces his imposing arrival. I close my eyes for a few moments, allowing my other senses to take over and paint the pictures in my mind. This is my favorite place. This hill. So far from traffic, noise and lights. Here where I feel so far from it all.
Again I stare up at the heavens. Galaxies are there, even if I cannot see them all. Countless stars and millions of miles. I can hardly fathom the vastness of this great, dark sea. Such grandeur. Such magnificence. I reach up in an attempt touch a star, but find it lightyears away. Even now, the light shining down has taken lifetimes to reach my wondering gaze. I’m so small, tucked away in this secret hiding place.
I imagine God’s hands, encompassing this entire world. My mind’s eye sees his fingers running through the drifting clouds. Caressing the moon. Rearranging the stars. To understand the mysteries of space would hardly compare to understanding the mysteries of the Maker himself. And I feel even smaller.
Somehow though, I’m wrapped in a gentle warmth. It’s a warmth that comes from my heart, overflowing to fill my soul. The Maker of the universe, the Creator of planets and Artist of the sky - He knows my name. He is the whisper in the wind. The song in my spirit. The arms that protect and shelter me from life’s chaotic storms. He is in every blade of grass. Every drop of dew. Every crater on the glowing moon.
Everything seems so far away. And yet my Father could not be more near. As I stare into the infinite expanse, I find being small has little bearing on his love. For He molded me, just as He molded the sparkling ellipses of planets and stars.
I hear another cricket join the chorus, and I decide to stay just a little while longer. This is my favorite place. Here where I feel so far from everything. And yet so close to the One I love.
