Of your position
Or your achievements
By a vast number of people,
Who cannot truly know
The heart and soul of you,
Your yearning for God.
Fame does not warm you
When you’re cold
Nor feed you
When you’re hungry.
Fame does not care for you
When you are sick,
Neither cry with you
When you are sad,
Nor smile with you
When you’re glad.
Fame does not keep you company
By the bedside of a loved one
Or hold your hand
When you stand at graveside.
Fame does not sit upon your lap
And look at you with trusting eyes
Like a little child.
Fame cannot make you
Healthier or taller
Or stronger or wiser,
Even kinder,
Nor can it give to you
A longer life.
Fame doesn’t share with you
Companionship and memories
And love like your family.
Fame is ephemeral,
The candle in the wind
That flickers and dies.
Before you can savor the thrill
Of the crowd’s admiration,
Someone has pushed you
Off the stage
To take your place.
