TITLE: The Hottie Who Was Almost a Nottie | Previous Challenge Entry

So when he asked me out, I wanted to say yes right away - but I hesitated.
You see, Jeremy has a reputation. People in small towns talk, and this small town is no exception. I’d heard stories about the way he treated his last girlfriend- and it wasn’t the way a decent Christian girl wants to be treated. I like to think of myself as a decent Christian girl so, I'd thought of him as "off-limits".
But a few weeks ago I walked by a park and saw him coaching a Little League team. At first, I admit I stopped because I enjoyed the way he looked in his coach uniform. But then, I saw how he worked with the kids. They were a typical Little League team, and many of the kids weren’t that good. But Jeremy seemed patient and caring and had a smile for each of the kids. I could see they all admired and respected him.
Over the next several weeks, I began to see Jeremy as more than just a hottie. So, when he waved at me, I waved back. The waving evolved to “hello’s” and after a few weeks, he came over after practice and spoke to me in person. “Hi,” he began. “I’m Jeremy.”
I’m Lisa,” I answered.
“Listen, Lisa, I’ve noticed you waving at me and I think I’ve even seen you smile at me a few times.”
I smiled and nodded in agreement.
Then, Jeremy said, “Maybe we could go to the movies sometime?”
By then, I really wanted to tell him, “yes.” He seemed so nice, and he was so cute. But I just couldn't ignore that story. Plus, I have a policy about first dates. So I told him, “I’d really like to, Jeremy. But I don't go on first dates alone. So instead, we could both go to my church group’s game night next Sunday.”
Jeremy blushed and said, “I guess you’ve heard that story about me, but it's not completely true. I'm not like that.”
I blushed, too. This was awkward. But, I persisted. “Jeremy, I did hear the story. And I'll admit it makes me hesitate. But I just don't see any guy alone until I get to know him for a while. So the invitation to my church group isn’t totally about that story.”
He looked miserable. “Look, I haven’t been able to get any girl in this town to date me. I’ll admit I’m not perfect, but that story doesn't tell the whole truth. I’d like a chance to prove I'm different. It'll be hard for us to get to know each other if we’re surrounded by your church group. Plus, I have to be honest: game night isn’t really my thing.”
I gave that some thought. “Well, if you like movies, the group is watching “Overcomer.” In two weeks."
He shook his head. “I’ve seen it. Look, Lisa. You really seem nice and I’d like to go out with you. No matter what you’ve heard, I’m a really nice guy. If I go to your church group with you, all your friends will be staring at me and giving me grief. C’mon, give me a chance to show you I'm worth it.”
I was really tempted. He looked so cute and sincere. And he'd really impressed me with the way he'd treated the boys on his team. But I hadn’t been lying about my first date policy. So I couldn't say yes.
He shook his head in what seemed like frustration. "I get it. Everyone in this town thinks I'm guilty. That girl exaggerated and now I have to pay for it. If you only give me a chance, you'll see."
I told him I was open to other suggestions for a group date. He shrugged and said, "You drive a hard bargain, Lisa. I guess I'll go to your group's game night." He asked for and wrote down the information about the church. Then, he said, "good bye until Sunday."
That made me smile as we waved good-bye. Whether the story about Jeremy was true - or not; I know my policy is a pretty good one.
After all; better safe than sorry - right?

But if I were to do so now, I’d say he showed up, played some games, they had a great time but decided to stay “just friends”.... because God led her to The Right Guy just a few weeks later.
And, because I’m the author, I will say that although he wasn’t an angel with that previous girlfriend, the rumor WAS an exaggeration
