I try so hard; I really do.
And yet my notes aren’t even close.
I’m pitch pathetic, this I know.
The sound that comes is just plain gross.

So maybe it’s the melody,
and I should try another song.
With more attempts it’s still no use.
My squawking is completely wrong.

I focus on a diff’rent part,
and now I try to harmonize.
I sadly sound a lot more like
a vacuum cleaner when it dies.

I asked for help from others, too.
And what they said - oh my, hang on.
They’d rather hear a pig throw up
than listen to me sing a song.

You think that’s bad, there’s even more.
They’d rather pick a stranger’s nose,
go in and lick the clinic floor,
or braid the hair on someone’s toes.

What’s even worse, I feel the same.
I’d rather bathe in turpentine
or dive into a vat of snot
than listen to this voice of mine.

But whose opinion matters here?
My friends’, my family’s, or mine?
I’m learning none of the above,
but only that of the divine.

So now I realize my voice
sounds diff’rent in his holy ears.
They filter out the wonky notes,
and my intent is what he hears.

This voice of mine is sweet to him.
I shake my head; I’m so amazed.
But make a joyful noise, it is.
I’ll belt it out with fearless praise.
