“Yes, ma’am,” the mechanic respectfully agreed.
“I had him take the Buick today. Now I think of it, he didn’t seem all that excited about it, but safety first you know – Bryce,” she said as her eyes registered his name tag.
“Yes ma’am. What kind of a noise is it making?” he asked.
“A scary rolling and clunking noise,” she rolled her hands one over the other to demonstrate.
“And where does it sound like the noise is coming from?” Bryce asked.
“I’d say somewhere behind the tire on the passenger side.” She watched Bryce make a note.
“What name should we use?” he continued.
“Uhh, oh our name? It’s Bugbee. I’m Elizabeth but everyone calls me ‘Bitsy’. Bitsy Bugbee, that’s me. Oh, but the car belongs to Billy - Billy Bugbee, my son – not Big Bill, that’s my husband – Big Bill Bugbee.
Bryce couldn’t help it, he knew he shouldn’t but it slipped out of his mouth. “So, you think there might be a ‘bug’ in the works?”
“A bug?! Well, dear me no. Just wait ‘til you hear the noise. You’ll know it’s no bug!”
“Yes, ma’am. I’ll see what I can find. You just make yourself comfortable in the waiting area.”
Bryce let out a long breath as he left ‘Bitsy’ and took her car for a test drive. Less than a mile into it, he was acutely aware of a problem. No noise.
He put the car on the lift. The underside showed nothing unusual. He took the tire off and checked the workings of the wheel and brakes. Nothing loose, nothing missing, nothing extra knocking around in there. He took the door apart. Again, nothing. He made sure everything was tightened, lubricated and working seamlessly. Seriously, the car was in great shape. He was frustrated, because he really wanted to find whatever was ‘bugging’ the Bugbees. He smiled a wry smile.
Nothing left to do but take it for another test drive. Make sure he didn’t mess anything up.
“Well, if that doesn’t beat all!” he thought. As soon as he made the first right out of the service lot he heard it. And it was a rolling noise with a clunk. He made another right and didn’t hear it. He made a left and there it was again. Another left on a slight incline and he heard it a little. What in the world? The rest of the turns were rights and then he got it. There was a pattern to this sound and Bryce was pretty sure he’d figured out the source.
He parked the car in the service area thinking through why he’d heard the noise now and not before. It made sense that putting the car up on the lift and/or some of the other checks he’d made must have jarred the culprit loose.
He opened the passenger side door, got into position so he could shine his flashlight in just the right place and there it was! Removal was easy.
“Mrs. Bugbee, you’re all set.” Bryce gave her the keys.
“You found the problem?” she asked.
“Well, not at first – I was a little frustrated, but…” he tried to hand her an energy drink.
“Oh, that’s OK. I had a coffee and one of those sweet little cakes in the waiting area. It was really quite filling.” Bitsy explained.
“No, I found this,” Bryce tried again.
“Well, keep it dear. Have you ever had one of those? If you haven’t you really should. They’re full of vitamins and minerals, quite good for you actually. That kind tastes just like bubblegum champagne.” Bitsy rattled on good naturedly.
“I didn’t know there was such a thing.” Bryce admitted.
“Of course there is, you’re holding it.” She smiled a knowing smile.
“But, this was under the seat. It was the pr…”
She stopped him in midsentence. “It’s OK dear, it’s non-alcoholic, probably was mine anyway. I thought I had bought four when Billy picked me up at the market last week. Hmm, what do you know? You may have just solved a mystery. Now, what did you say was wrong with Billy’s car?”
