He looked around. Others walked about and sat with no problem. A bead of sweat trickled down his brow, and another down the small of his back. He grabbed his shirt and lifted it over his head. He wiped his forehead with it, and threw it on the ground next to him.
He picked up the bag next to him, and fished around in it. He took out the bottle of sun screen. He smiled, glad he remembered to bring it. He hated the stuff, though. He opened the lid and squirted the bottle. It ran onto his hand, liquid like oil, having heated up in the bottle. Then the bottle went fwiiitt, spraying dots of lotion all around.
He put the bottle down, and rubbed his hands together, then spread the liquid lotion on his arms. He repeated the process, over and over and over again. It took so long. Finally, Jim finished, and leaned back in his chair.
The sun beat down upon him. He closed his eyes, but the light of the sun shone so brightly that his eyes hurt in discomfort. He leaned forward, and searched his bag again. This time he pulled out his sunglasses and put them on. He leaned back.
Jim felt the heat of the sun roast his arms and legs. As he sat there with his eyes closed, Jim imagined bacon frying in a pan. He laughed at himself, but didn’t get out of the chair. Not yet. The time wasn’t quite right.
Sweat formed all over his body. It helped cool him, though not much. Just a little longer.
Finally, Jim stood up. He put his hands on his hips. He smiled as he looked around. In front of him he watched for a space, clear of people. He waited a minute.
Then he took off. He ran as hard as he could. Sand kicked up behind him spraying his back and the back of his legs. He pumped his legs and hit the water. His speed slowed significantly, but he kept pumping until the water was over his knees. He plunged head first into the surf, the cool of the water washing over his body. Nothing beat going to the beach.
