My ears perked up to the familiar loud squeak which signaled the opening of the garage. I bounded to the kitchen. My rear wiggled with excitement as I waited. If only I still had a tail, but at least I have a stump. I’m so excited!
The door finally pushed open. There he was.
“Hello Sam. Have you been a good boy today?” Billy patted my head and walked past me.
I rushed after him. As soon as I sniffed his shoe, and then his pant leg, I knew he needed me. That stale office smell was so boring. I jumped up on him.
“Down, Sam! You know better than that!” Billy shuffled through white envelopes in his hand, and then laid them down on the kitchen counter.
He moved to the refrigerator and pulled out a plate. Maybe he’ll share. My tongue hung out and drool dripped out of my mouth and onto the floor. He stuck the plate into the oven. I watched as he turned a dial. Every time he puts something in there it smells heavenly.
My rear wagged back and forth as I waited. Billy walked to the living room and I followed. He dropped onto his big chair. I was sure he would notice me now as I sauntered up next to him, and forced my head underneath his hand.
I smiled as he patted my head. Scratch behind my ears. Oh please, scratch. I reached with my tongue to lick his hand.
“That’s enough.” Billy picked up his remote.
No! Not that! I sprang onto his lap and placed my paws on his shoulders. Look at me Billy, I need you.
He shoved me down, and pushed the big green button. The television screen flashed on.
With a soft whine, I laid at his feet. This guy needs a lesson on going back to basics. First we walk, then we play fetch, then he feeds me. Where are his manners anyway?
I must have dozed, because my dream about a chase with the ball was interrupted by a piercing noise. My head shot up and I sniffed the air. I looked at Billy who was positioned sideways in the chair. His head hung over the side of it, and drool flowed out of his mouth. He looks like me.
I nudged him with my nose, but to no avail. Then I pushed him with my front paws, and he shifted slightly. Come on, wake up. He turned his head away.
I hurdled myself onto him.
“Sam! What are you doing?” With much effort, Billy sat up and elbowed me off of him.
I landed on my feet and barked.
That’s when Billy heard the alarm and smelled the smoke.
“Oh, no! My dinner!” He darted into the kitchen, and I followed close on his heels. Happy day! We’re going to play tag.
Billy stopped in front of the oven, and I plowed into him. “Get back Sam. Go away.”
My head hung and I wandered back to the living room. With a sigh, I climbed onto my pillow in the corner, and then plopped down. Things just aren’t the same anymore. He used to be so much fun.
I closed my eyes and went to sleep.
A rub on my head caused me to awaken. I opened my eyes to see Billy who had squatted down in front of me. He had a huge grin on his face.
“Sam, you just saved my life. You’re a good dog.” He wrapped both of his arms around my neck and hugged me.
I sat up and wagged my rear.
“Let’s go for a run. We haven’t done that in a long time.” He stood and waved my leash at me.
Without hesitation, I raced him to the door.
