And though he’d no stone idols
He’d kneel and pray before,
Appeared a smear upon his name
Within the Book of Life.
He told a lie, a tiny one,
And though it was
Of little consequence,
Appeared a smear upon his name
Within the Book of Life.
He looked with lust
Upon his neighbor’s wife,
And though he didn’t
Act on his desire,
Appeared a smear upon his name
Within the Book of Life.
He saw the car another had
And wished that it were his,
And though he never stole it,
Appeared a smear upon his name
Within the Book of Life.
He spoke unkind and careless words
Without a single thought,
And though he did no violence,
Appeared a smear upon his name
Within the Book of Life.
He went to church on Sunday,
And to the poor gave money.
He thought because he acted well,
His “good” was good enough,
But God who sees in each one’s heart
Knows every thought and motive,
Judged him as man, fallen.
But then when he bowed and confessed
The evil in his heart,
The Lord forgave his every sin
And wiped away
With His redemptive blood
Each smear that had appeared
Upon his name
Within the Book of Life.
