The people that He called me to, they should have had to pay
I knew that if I preached and they repented there and then
My God would show them mercy and forgive them all their sins.
It isn’t right for folk so bad to get away scot free
So I ran away, refused to hear what God was telling me
I jumped aboard a sailing ship that took me far away
Pretended not to hear the words I thought I heard God say.
We sailed till land had slipped away and all I saw was waves
I didn’t tell the crew I’d hidden from a God who saves.
I went below and closed my eyes and fell into a sleep
I didn’t hear the howling wind, my slumber was so deep.
And then someone was shaking me, “Wake up. We’re going to drown.
How can you sleep when everything is tossing all around?
The storm’s so fierce, the waves so big I fear the boat will sink
We’re tossing chattel overboard, just saving food and drink.”
I hurried up and what I saw just made me quake with fear
The wrath of God was on that ship, to me that was so clear.
“It’s me,” I cried, “I am to blame. Don’t waste another sec
God wants my life, now pick me up and throw me from your deck.”
And when they did as they were told, the strangest thing ensued
Instead of wild and angry waves that battered me and bruised,
I felt a warmth and quiet, like re-entering a womb
All was dark and quiet in that soft and fleshy room.
I felt the comfort of the Lord, I knew He’d rescued me
He’d sent a fish to swallow me and save me from the sea
With love like that what could I do but follow in His plan
“I’ll go, Lord, straight to Nineveh, just take me to that land.”
It took three days, but then the big fish spat me to the ground
I cried out and I preached to all the people in the town.
The townsfolk called for mercy as they fell upon their knees
And like I always knew He would, the Lord God heard their pleas.
The moral of my story is for everyone to hear
God loves to bless; He hates to curse. He makes that very clear
If we ignore the call of God and try to run away
The storms will come to rock our boat and stir our hearts to pray
And in those times if we’ll just throw ourselves upon His grace
He’ll rescue us and take us back so we can sing His praise
He uses broken vessels and he’ll use both you and me
If we’ll just heed the call instead of running off to sea.
So when you hear the whisper of His Spirit in your soul
Remember that He loves you and He wants you to be whole.
He knows our greatest joy is found in list’ning to His voice
But it’s a constant Kingdom rule: We always have a choice.
So take a lesson from my book and trust the Living God
His plans for you bring light and love and happiness and good
Don’t wait, like me who ran away from doing what He wished
Till God’s love made me born again in the belly of a fish.
