chiseled to perfection
perhaps in the image of a god
or mythical beast.
Precious metal, exotic wood
carved exquisitely,
releasing majestic animals.
Some are crude;
a couple of bricks or
heavy stones purposely chosen.
But by far,
the most powerful set
are the dates etched deep
on headstones.
In every graveyard
and county cemetery,
two dates encase
a most precious library;
a life once lived.
One side holds the date of birth.
New life, new hope, perfection.
On the other side the date of death.
The end of toil,
perhaps pain.
An end of a unique story.
So they sit,
the bookends of life
with nought but a dash
between them.
But oh the adventures,
love stories, mysteries
and tragedies
that lie between!
Bookends are useful,
and sometimes
beautiful,
but really their use
is for show.
While they may be admired,
or even caressed,
it’s what they uphold
that is key.
Their use is to keep
books standing up
and on display,
with in easy reach
to read.
And so it is with the
dates of destiny.
Birth and death
are just the beginning
and end.
It’s really what happens
with what is between.
A life well lived is a
story we all wish to read.
