Latched on without a sound;
My clothes are all too tight,
So nothing fits quite right.
I gave up pie for Lent,
Which didn’t make a dent
In losing twenty pounds
That made my doctor frown.
“You’re getting older, gal,
But that’s not terminal:
Eat healthy, wholesome foods
And with desserts be shrewd.
Nutrition is your friend;
Eat nothing that offends.
Be moderate with treats
And anything that’s sweet.”
I ruled out donuts, then,
And calories by tens;
But that was not enough—
There still was naughty stuff:
The brownies and the cakes;
The juicy, tender steaks
Made way to tasteless breads
And salads, in their stead.
“Eat smaller portions now,
And chew them like a cow:
Take time to digest slow;
Drink water to-and-fro.
Cholesterols control,
(Your counts are none too low!)
Some pills might do the trick
To keep your plaque un-thick.”
Be gone—buttered muffins!
Away, you frosted flakes!
Be off—sweetened coffee!
Depart, fudge and toffee!
"Not easy is this chore
Of eating less than more:
In case you haven’t heard,
This diet’s for the birds!"
“Discouraged, you are, ma’am,
Depressed from counting grams.
I have some meds for that,
But they can lead to fat.
Let’s see what we can do
To make your mind like new;
Your counts have lowered some—
No need to be so glum!
Allow yourself a break,
And drink an ice-cream shake.
One time in every ten,
Arrange to fill a yen.”
Okay, I’m on the mend;
A light is at the end!
It may take longer now,
But that I will allow.
A TINY piece of pie
No longer I deny;
A LITTLE slice of cake
My diet will not break.
Discretion is the key
To moderate my needs;
It pays off in the end
To have a regimen.
Extremes I now forsake;
The middle ground I take:
Sweets still will have a place,
But fill a smaller space.
I’ve lost those pesky pounds,
(I hope they’re never found);
I’m healthy as a horse
And suffer no remorse.
Alas! My work’s not done;
I’ve only just begun:
My soul is sick and frail,
Warped diet there unveiled.
My promises to God,
At best, are mere slipshod;
Intentions not enough,
Becoming simply fluff.
“You feast on sweets alone
That don’t produce backbone;
You go to church for show,
A shallow cameo!
One scripture verse a week
Is only just a peek
Of what I have in store
To bless you at your core.”
I started searching, then
To fill my inner yen;
With daily, seeking heart,
I drank His Word--apart.
Like meat, they strengthened me
And filled those spirit needs:
In joining prayerful groups,
I chomped on Bible soup.
“You’re on the right track, now,
Imbibing veggie chow:
Communing from your heart
With Me, is very smart!
Another thing you need
Is bran as daily feed;
Enact your good resolves
As you become involved.”
Attending fewer shows,
I give myself to those
Who need a helping hand
Or me, to take a stand.
Computer games were fun
And T.V. Number One;
But now I moderate
The time that I intake.
“I cherish you, you know,
And follow where you go;
I want to give you more:
Receive My Love outpoured!
Bad habits break you down
Until you almost drown;
They really have to go
For you to purely glow.
Abuses you ingest
Cause havoc and distress;
Accusing you of sin
And binding you within.”
Indulging every whim
Grows chubby, thickened skin
Enhancing only me
With fancy spending sprees.
My selfish ways revealed
(And things before concealed);
Excesses in my meals
I’m shaving to “get real”.
Absorbing all that’s right,
Continuing the fight
To purge my heart and soul
Until I am made whole.
“That’s what it’s all about;
Your Love I will not doubt.
Your Word proclaims all Truth
Of which I’ll be a sleuth.
I want to seek Your best;
A life-long earnest quest
To be what you designed
Becoming more divine.”
Becoming trim and fit,
A constant battle pit;
It’s all about control
To make our lives all whole.
