On a cold summer morn
As wind whipped through the tundra plain,
An arctic hare was born.
Aurora was her given name,
But she preferred just Rory;
She love to watch the northern lights
Dance and tell a story.
Since the summer sun never slept,
Rory could race all day,
Hide from owls in shrubs and grasses;
Her fur was brownish grey.
But soon the days grew colder still,
And twilight stirred the sky;
Then poppies disappeared in snow
And Rory wondered, “Why?”
She nestled in the rocky slopes,
A hundred hares together;
Now she and her brunette furred friends
Turned white as young dove feathers.
Ermines, foxes, and owls too
With half the year gone by
Changed their coats to white washed fur,
And Rory wondered, “Why?”
Darkness soaked the land for months
As temps dipped down below;
While others planned a place to sleep,
She planned to prance through snow.
After a nocturnal nap,
She blinked her big blue eyes;
She stretched and ate crowberry snacks
As the sun began to rise.
The arctic circled; seasons passed
And when the sun rose high,
To spread the land with life again
This year the hare knew why...
Her outlook changed; she understood
As she skipped through sun-kissed snow,
To survive she was designed for this,
Her home—the ice chateau.
