A soft breeze whispers a gentle prayer
A comma moon pauses in a glitter-painted sky, when
Suddenly, the solitude is broken by
The cracking and snapping of dry branches
The silence explodes into the chuffing, snorting, hmph, hmph
Of a giant crashing through the woods.
My heart leaps into my throat
Pounding like a hammer on an anvil
Yet my feet remain frozen, ignoring my pleas to flee
Unable to move at the advance of this woodland monster.
I don’t know who is more startled, the doe or me
We stand gazing at each other
Her ears erect, her body tense for the slightest hint of danger
Her large eyes deep pools of liquid obsidian
Reflecting back the stars.
Time seems to stand still and
For an eternity we share a moment of peace, then
With a final “hmph” and a flick of her white tail
She bounds off into the woods.
As if waking from a dream
I become aware, once again, of the wooded night.
The twinkling stars and crescent moon
Resume their nightly dance across the sky
My breathing becomes part of the evening breeze
My heart joins the quiet nocturnal cadence
A blanket of silence once again covers the night.
