her laughter sends kites to soaring
with warm possibilities
and birds, awakened by the sound of her laughter,
fill the air with their songs
and begin the business of building nests and laying eggs.
In fits and bursts, sometimes gentle and smiling,
sometimes stormy and grumpy,
earth begins to shake off its drab winter garb
as old man winter reluctantly lets go of his hold,
his gnarled arthritic fingers slowly relaxing
under the warm glow of her smile.
Bright trumpets adorned in shades of saffron and yellow
burst forth in splendid glory
to announce her arrival,
encouraging others to join her entourage
clothed in their finest array,
scenting the air with the heady perfume of lilac and lily-of-the valley.
At the sound of her voice,
shy leaves peek out of their hiding place
uncurling, unfolding to reveal verdant jewels
of beryl and aquamarine, emerald and jade,
creating a jeweled castle where light and shadow gracefully waltz
across the moss-carpeted floor.
With rain-scented tears of joy
Spring waters the thirsty earth
and both rejoice at her return
and the hope she brings,
precious gifts from our Creator of
resurrection and new life.
