The bundle wrapped in pink
And gazed down on her firstborn
Raining tears upon her face
She held the child and rocked
Her weary body ached
Fear stalked her, crowing victory
Her baby’s life at stake
The doctor shook his head
“There’s nothing we can do”
But my mother cried in prayer
And God breathed
Despite the odds
I survived, then thrived
Nurtured by my parents
Sheltered by our God
Innocence became worldliness
Childlike faith, jaded skepticism
Pride worn like a cloak
Then stripped away
Fear and doubt were close companions
My parents’ love rejected
God’s love doubted
My world turned upside down
Desire frustrated
Ambition unrealized
My façade began to crumble
Desperation filled my soul
“Why does God hate me? What have I done?”
My wounded heart’s cry
Echoed in the emptiness
A void no mortal could fill
I clung to those possessing
Peace and confidence
Seeking reasons for their joy
And for my lack
Glimpses of truth pierced my darkness
The simple faith I’d left
Was the rock beneath the feet
Of contented friends
The battle raged
As my weary spirit cowered
Torn by my need for help
And desire to hide
Like Nicodemus, I misunderstood
The call to be born again:
“It’s too late for me,
How can I return?”
But seeds of promise sown on soil
Harrowed by disappointment
And watered by my tears
Began to grow
All earthly hope exhausted
Jesus wrenched me from despair
As the faithful cried in prayer
And God breathed

Glimpses of truth pierced my darkness
The simple faith I’d left
Made me think of the biblical phrase, "LET THERE BE LIGHT!"
