It wasn’t so bad when I was first married. It was something we did in the same place at the same time, though individually.
The advent of children changed that irrevocably. No matter how early I rose, the minute I was up so were they. Whatever I read at the end of the day had no staying power: in one drooping eye and out the other.
Later, being a working mum, full-time teacher, and primary income earner only exacerbated the situation. Mornings, I thought, were pressured enough just trying to get everyone out the door on time. Evenings and nights were crammed with the family and trying to prepare for the next day. I snatched a prayer on the run. Yes, He was faithful. It is inevitable, however that I reaped what I had sown. I know with the 20/20 vision of hindsight that many of the issues I struggle with now are because I did not daily cast my burdens upon Him during those years.
Having retired from work outside the home you’d think that finding time to spend with my Saviour and Friend would be easy. Somehow it wasn’t. The struggle continued until, like Old Mother Hubbard, the cupboard was stripped bare.
I heard His voice calling from afar. Draw near to me and I will draw near to you. Ask. Seek. Knock. I am your Father I will not give you a snake when you ask for bread.
One godly friend talks about her Quiet Time as having a meal with God and I began ruminating on meals I’ve had with good friends.
They were leisurely. Full of laughter and spiced with frequent deep and meaningful moments. The conversation was two, three, four, five-way. We came away feeling energized, uplifted and encouraged. But they were usually long and infrequent.
I didn’t think that I could sustain a meal just yet. But coffee? Now coffee is a different thing. To begin with, I have coffee every day. It’s part of my breakfast routine. Could I sustain coffee with my Friend? I thought I might be able to do that. The routine of coffee is already established. All I need to add is my Bible and invite my Friend.

We sit at the table on the veranda and chat for as long as it takes me to drink my coffee, sometimes longer.
Maybe I should buy a bigger mug.
One day I might work up from a coffee to a meal. Who knows? But at least I have started.

Like the characters in the movie, the mission wasn’t so impossible for me after all.
