Fresh blood splattered against the concrete wall as the young man crashed to the sidewalk, his tattered Bible sliding into the gutter. Momentarily, a steel-toed boot exploded into his chin snapping his head back, violently. Darkness closed in on his vision as another boot connected with his ribcage.
“Hey Bible-boy,” shouted a venomous voice, “prophesy now…who kicked you?”
Silhouetted figures milled around in the darkness hooting with poisonous laughter. Slowly, the group closed in on the semi-conscious young man. A large black boot stepped on the bible lying nearby. An unforgettably revolting angular-scarred face leaned forward, menacingly. A shiny switch blade glinted in the moonlight.
“Where’s your God now, choir boy?” a gruff voice garbled. A demonic chill touched the youngster’s nerves. A cold steel blade pressed in on his throat.
“Help me, Jesus,” he eked.
Suddenly, headlights appeared at the end of the street; blue lights flashing. The murderous crowd fled. A parting boot to the temple sent the teenager into unconsciousness.
Present Time
“Shaltar. Watch. Rarely does our Lord give us the opportunity to watch fellowship of this kind,” stated Raphael.
“He’s so still and calm,” whispered Shaltar to his comrade.
“We angels have a wonderful experience here in the eternals, but it is they who are indwelt by Him. They get to taste his nature,” replied Raphael softly.
“But so few of them actually do?” remarked Shaltar. Raphael remained silent choosing instead to watch the older man sit quietly in a wooden chair, his speckled hair fluttering in the wind.
Slowly, a bluish glow emerged within the man. From there, white light gradually appeared enveloping the man’s torso. Presently, a white-robed figure appeared within the light. Shortly, another figure appeared embracing Him. Momentarily, the first being placed another robe over the shoulders of the second. Immediately, the two became one. Soon, the white light flowed throughout the old man’s body, yet he remained perfectly still, absorbing the presence of his Lord.
Awestruck, two heavenly messengers, dropped to their knees overcome with the intensity of divine nature being imparted to another.
“He asks for nothing,” remarked Raphael, “except to experience his Lord. Others ask and need and want, loving gifts and power. Yet, all of these are couched in Him and in His love.”
Tears ran from the man’s eyes. A sweet smelling aroma rose toward the heavens. Though he uttered no words, adoration ushered forth from deep within. It came, not from his mind…nor from his soul… but from the white light deep within his being. Indwelt with a living, pulsating God, his spirit called forth to God’s Spirit and thus the man fellowshipped with his Father and his Lord. “Our fellowship is with the Father and with his son, Jesus Christ.” (I Jn. 1:3)
Awestruck, two heavenly messengers sprawled on a sea of glass. He’s learned what it means to have ‘Christ in you,’” stated Raphael, “but, it didn’t come easy.”
Twenty Two Years Ago
“Thank you, Josh for praying for her,” said an older lady as the two walked to the end of the hospital corridor. “I know this was difficult for you, what with the recent loss of your wife. The thirtyish dark-haired man nodded, solemnly.
“My granddaughter was diagnosed with this cancer a year ago. Surgeries and chemotherapy have slowed it down, but it’s still moving towards her lymph glands,” the woman remarked.
“Not anymore,” whispered, Joshua, placing his hand gently on her shoulder. Turning, Josh walked towards the exit door, alone.
Opening the door, he realized immediately he’d entered a patient’s room rather than the exit. An emaciated figure lay in the bed gazing at him through squinting eyes. Josh quickly turned to leave when he stopped cold. Clearly, he’d spotted an image that’d been burned into his memory. The patient, barely conscious, had a familiar scar on his right cheek. Instantly, the beating of years before played like a movie in his mind. He knew this man.
The man groaned. An inner force pulled Josh’s hand from the door. Turning, the Spirit uttered quietly, “Pray for him.” Josh looked down at a clipboard hanging at the end of the bed. The words were illegible, but at the end of the top line, he saw in parenthesis (HIV-POS.).
Gingerly, Josh walked over to the man. Glancing up, the patient mumbled, “hopeless.”
Slowly, Josh pulled a chair over and whispered, “God is love. And that love, not the nails…held Jesus Christ on the cross for you.”
