“Ooops… ahhhh” she cried out.
Mummy ran outside, picked her up, and hugged her. “I told you to put your shoes on, honey”. she said comfortingly
Thereafter Sarah never walked barefoot outdoors again.
So imagine how upset she was when later that week in Sunday School, she heard the story of Jesus being made to wear a crown made of thorns. ‘That must be a lot of thorns to make a crown and the pain’…; she thought.
When the family came home that day, her father could see that she was upset.
“What is the matter, honey?” he asked.
“Dad”, she said tearfully “If a single thorn hurt my foot so much. A crown of thorns made up of almost one hundred, and all of them piercing his head”. {John 19:2}.
Sarah’s dad responded, “It was the only way! The only way that he could buy human people back from the evil one, and as the Bible says “He was pierced for our iniquities, he was bruised for our iniquities;... and by his stripes we were healed” (Isaiah 53:5}.
After Sarah calmed down and was asleep. Johnnie, her dad kept thinking about Jesus and the terrible cruel torture he endured. Not only was he hung on a cross for hours, held on it by iron nails that pierced his hands and feet, but he was also brutally pierced, by the evil crown made of thorns piercing the skin on his forehead and scalp, and by a sword in his side. The pain must have been unbearable and excruciating. {John 19:18,34,}.
Sarah’s mum lay quietly near her husband and soon she spoke.
“Another piercing took place that is not often spoken of. Mary, Jesus’s mother was given a sorrowful message by the prophet Simeon. He said that “a sword will pierce her soul”, but he also gave her a message of joy, verifying that God had sent Jesus to earth, and, he spoke of the great impact that Jesus would have on many in Israel. The sword ‘piercing her soul’ speaks of sorrow that only a mother can understand. {Luke 2:34-35}. A lot of piercing takes place in our lives.
Wearing armor protected soldiers and the horses they rode. Warships and combat aircraft are also armored to protect them from enemy attacks. Christians are under attack. Yes, we are in a daily war, but God has provided protection. Paul advises us to ‘be strong in The Lord, so we can stand against the devil’s schemes, and, he reminds us that God’s armor protects us from head to foot, including our minds. We wrestle not against flesh and blood. Our ‘shield’ of faith extinguishes the arrows of the evil one; yes, Faith in God annihilates the sharp piercing arrows in their tracks. {Ephesians 6: 10-18}.
