His Omniscience meant that He is all-knowing and all-seeing.
He knew that the city of Ninevah was wicked.
He said to Jonah, “Go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim judgement against it,
for their wickedness has come up before Me.”{Jonah 1:2}.
God used men and women to fulfill His purpose on earth.
He spoke to Jonah and told him to go preach to them.
He wanted the Ninevites to change. He didn't want to destroy them.
God is good and loving.
Unfortunately, Jonah decided to run away.
He booked a trip on a ship going to the opposite direction.
“But Jonah ran away to Tarshish to escape from the presence of the Lord and his duty as His prophet. {Jonah 1:3}.
Jonah hid in the bowels of the ship and went off to sleep.
But in the ship, and in the sea, all was not well.
God is Omnipresent. He is everywhere at once.
He knew where Jonah was.
So, imagine that??
Jonah thought he could hide from God!!
The Lord God is the Creator of all things.
“But the Lord hurled a great wind toward the sea, and there was a violent tempest on the sea so that the ship was about to break up” {Jonah 1:4}.
As the Creator, God could send the wind, and He did.
;”... God made] the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so” {Genesis 1:7}.
The sailors were all utterly terrified. They prayed to their gods but nothing happened!!
They even threw all the cargo into the sea but still nothing..
Finally, the captain takes action and Jonah is awoken.
“So the captain came up to him and said, “How can you stay asleep? Get up! Call on your god! Perhaps your god will give a thought to us so that we will not perish.” {Jonah 1:6}.
The crew cast lots and it fell on Jonah. They quized him and then commanded him to pray to his god.
He then openly confessed the truth.
“So he said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I reverently fear and worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”
So now they knew that it was Jonah God who was responsible.
Jehovah God, The Creator who was Omnipresent and Omniscient had done this.
Jonah told them to throw him into the sea.
They did not want to, but under duress, they did.
But guess what?
As soon as they did, the storm stopped!!
However, as we know, Jonah didn't drown in the torrid tumultuous sea, instead
“ the Lord had prepared, appointed, destined a great fish to swallow Jonah.
And Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights.{Jonah 1:17}.
Again, God shows His Almighty power.
Jonah was kept alive!!
While he was in the fish’s belly, he prayed and repented;
and then…”So the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.”{Jonah 2:10}.
He eventually did what God told him to do.
In this story, God The Father is seen as The Almighty, The Creator and the controller of winds and storms, of fishes of the sea and He is All-Powerful. All-seeing, He sees everything and everyone and knows everything.
"The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch over the evil and the good."
{Proverbs 15:3}.
He has The power to do good and is a Good Loving God.
He has the power to make us do things, but He chose to give us free will.
Lovingly, He has ways of being in control of nature, as He wills.
Jonah’s experience shows many components or aspects of Almighty God..
