My son, hear your father’s instruction, And do not forsake your mother’s teaching;.. [Proverbs 1:8}

‘The advice sounded so good to Sam, but his dad was a drug dealing thug. He was not a good role model. He was abusive and often said “I hate God”.

Sam was now a grown man, but as a young child and a teenager, he had no father to look up to. He was frequently covered in bruises and mum and he learned to cover them up. He related his life story to his counselor.

‘As far as not forsaking mum’s teaching, that was easier’ thought Sam.
“What is your mum like?” asked Mrs.Gines, his counselor.
“Mum is sweet, gentle, kind, and wise. She took me and my sister Jane to church on Sundays when we were young” he replied. “We were so blessed to have Grandma and Grandpa Shaw. They called us often but they lived in Canada..”.

‘Solomon was blessed with a good father, so he could write these wise words’ was Sam’s reaction when he read this verse..

“Well Sam, what is your next step? You are a man now..” added Mrs Gines.
“I am determined not to be like my father!” Sam reacted angrily.
“Sam, your father is a lost soul and he is still alive. I think that you should try to reconcile with him?”
“No, no, no!” Sam yelled defiantly.
In response, Mrs Gines said “Your mom is still with him, despite the horrible years. What do you think she wants you to do? In fact, what has she told you to do?”

After some quiet reflection, Sam recalled the advice Mom had repeatedly given him. She had often said, “ You must forgive your father ,my love and pray for him daily.” He himself was an abused child and he has a lot of pain from his past..

Weeks later, Sam spoke to his counselor again,"You'll be glad to know that I spoke to The Father about my dad, and I spoke to my dad about The Father. Dad was not in a good mood. I said to him; “I forgive you, dad and I am praying for you.”
In response, he was surprisingly quiet and smiled briefly.

Mom was still there at home with him… and hanging on. She winked at him as he left. Gave him a tight hug and said “Well done, son. I am so proud of you!”
In Sam's heart he made a silent vow that he would keep visiting and interacting with his dad, and of course, ask others to pray. He remained hopeful that his dad would one day find peace with God and have a loving relationship with his wife and his two children.
