I am happy to report that there are fathers who have played invaluable roles in the lives of sons who have “no visible and responsible fathers or mothers”. One such person is given the title Papa Mac because of his impact on their life.
His son speaks highly of him, and he is grateful for what he has done for him and his friends. Here he recounted some of the ways he taught him as he grew and how he listened.
“I am from a Christian home. Both parents are born again Christian so church activities were a natural aspect of my life. I accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and was baptized at fifteen. This I did because of his exemplary lifestyle and power of forgiveness.
My first three years at high school were excellent. As “a” student my work was commendable, but I began to lose interest because there was no competition, so my grades fell. My father came unexpectedly to school and peered into my classroom where I was doing my “own thing” with ears plugged while the teacher was teaching. My friends saw my father and nudged me so I unplugged and started paying attention. He said nothing but left.
On reaching home we spoke. Then he drew a map and pointed out to me that I will be removed to another school because of poor grades. He pointed out to me that the school is near to home so the family will be able to save, he needed a decision within two months. I was shocked but kept quiet.
Unknown to my mother, she came into my room to share with me one day. She saw the drawn map that Dad had made.
“Why is this map here?” She questioned.
“Daddy said he wants to send me to Robert Lightbourne High if my grades do not improve.”
“What, are you telling me that you are planning to give up such an opportunity that so many boys aspire to have?”
“No”, I bowed my head in shame.
“I certainly agree with your father,” she said. Then she walked away.
My neighbor who was going to a different school would complain to my father that he was unable to attend school because he did not have lunch money. Here Dad offered him lunch money. He then asked to see his report and he discussed how he could do better.
Over time the other children came to the house for all kinds of help. My home was like a bee nest where “honey “help would always be given.
It was not only academics that I had to be corrected about... I remember a female visiting me while my parents were out. Dad came home and he was displeased.
“What are you two doing inside? He asked.
“Why are you not on the veranda, never let this happen again.”
Needless to say, I was embarrassed. He stood. While both of us went onto the veranda.
When my mother came from work I told her about my embarrassment, but her response was similar.
Over the years at college, during my early work life, he has guided me. I am now about to get married and once I ask for his input, he readily will comply.
Because I have been listening to my father, I can say, I am blessed”.
