I cannot remember how we met, but Marj and I have been friends for over 40 years. She is six years younger than I am. We used to attend the same church in Guyana, our birthplace. Now she lives in the United States of America, and I live in Canada.
I was her mentor in the early part of our friendship. She would come to my home, and we would talk for hours. She was in her early twenties and faced emotional challenges as a young Christian woman, and I had encountered some of those challenges and had maintained my walk with God. I would listen to her and direct her to the one who could keep her on the right path. And that one is none other but the Lord Jesus Christ.
Our friendship developed, and it became a friend-and-sister relationship. Marj was a part of my natural family, and I became a part of hers.
I grew up with my grandmother, who treated her just as she treated me.
Marj and I supported each other in the good and bad times. We were there for each other, regardless of the situation. We had fun times and difficult times together.
When I married, she was there alongside my sister to ensure everything went well. And years after, when my husband died, she came to Canada to be with me in my grief and pain. She supported me emotionally and spiritually. Although we differ in religious beliefs, we can still talk about the love of God and pray for each other.
Her mother died during the pandemic, and she could not come to Canada and attend the funeral. Last holiday weekend in the United States of America, she and two sisters came over to Canada to visit their mother's graveside. I have a busy schedule on Sundays because of church activities, but I decided I needed to show up at her sister's house in Canada to be there with her and let her know that I still care.
Marj is kind-hearted, considerate, trustworthy, and loyal, which is an excellent value in friendship. I am truly blessed to have her as my friend and sister.
And it feels good to know that I have a friend who still loves me, and we can still have fun together, and who I can still trust when the goings in life get tough.
