They were supposed to be friends. She had openly insulted her and said
“I want nothing to do with you!” she yelled. They were not alone when this happened. They were in English language class.
She left the room in tears. The class teacher followed her outside and tried to console her.
She gave her permission to go see the school counselor, which she did.
“Joanne and I have been friends since elementary school.” she said between tears.
She believed that the anger was because she was doing better in her grades and Joanne was jealous. She was not being a friend.
Somehow she made it through the rest of that day.
After the dismissal bell, she walked out of school, alone.
No friend at her side. She pondered as she walked the two blocks home slowly.
In the doorway of their home stood Caleb, her older brother.
He could see the raw emotion on her face and came towards her hastily.
“Hey Sheila, what's wrong?”
She was so relieved to unburden herself and as usual, he comforted her.
Using kind words and his usual wisdom..
“Forgive Joanne and you know, I'm sure God has a better friend for you”
Sheila spent some weeks without a best friend...but she was not friendless.
She noticed that there were girls who were not as popular or favored as some.
One girl in particular, Kelly, was in many of her classes.
Kelly was a quiet girl but would speak up on topics, like social issues, the church and God.
Especially when evolution was mentioned by the science teacher, she would speak up.
Obviously, she was brave and knowledgeable on the topic of Creation and she opposed evolution.
Kelly and Sheila became friends and although they went to different churches, they had a lot in common. In class, Sheila started speaking up for Kelly. She did not care if that made her unpopular.
On the topic of Joanne, her former friend, she somehow moved on. It did not hurt her anymore and she certainly did not trust her as she used to. No longer best friends, just nodding friends.
Thankfully, over time, she made new friends who were so much more agreeable and consistent in their behavior. She grew older.. Kelly was still her chief buddy, and of course, older brother Caleb was like a rock.
