“I don’t think I can do this anymore, Susan. I have been going through this trial for three months. It is too hard. I just feel like giving up on God. Where is He when I need Him?”
“Ally, I know it seems like you just can’t take any more, but I promise God has you in His hands. He will never let you go. He told us in the Bible that we would face trials of many kinds, but He also promised that we would never have more than we can bear. We have to just give it time.” Susan was trying to help her friend in her time of need, but she knew Ally was really walking through a difficult season in her life.
“I don’t know if I can go on like this,” Ally said with a huge sigh. “I know that God is telling me to just keep holding on, but I don’t know how much more I can take.” Ally sat at her kitchen table with her head in her hands.
Susan tried to think of something to say to reassure Ally, but nothing was coming to mind. She knew she had a say something, but she felt as if she was grasping at straws. She prayed for some encouraging words. “Do you remember when I was going through Breast cancer last year?”
Ally lifted her head and looked at her friend. She recalled her friend’s problems and felt almost embarrassed at the way she was acting with her small illness. “Yes,” she responded.
“Do you know who got me through that tough time?” Susan asked pointedly.
Ally looked at Susan. She thought she knew the point her friend was trying to make. “I know it was God.”
“It was definitely God, but also you! I would not have made it through the way I did without having you and your encouraging words.”
Ally sat up straight in her chair. “Me? I feel like all I did was try to keep your spirits up. I really helped that much?”
“You most certainly did! I remember one particular day that I was having a really hard time. I was at my lowest point. I was ready to give up on everything. Then you said something that turned everything around. You said that I should just wait patiently and joyfully for the Lord to bring my healing manifestation.”
“I do remember that,” Ally said with a smile on her face. “I really meant it, too. God has already taken our diseases when He took those stripes. He has already healed us, but we have to wait for the manifestations.”
“That is so true. The day you said that changed my whole perspective. I looked to God again instead of blaming Him for my troubles. You helped change my life. Now, I want to do the same for you.” Susan smiled lovingly at her friend.
“Thank you for reminding me that even though I have to go through tough trials, I can face them joyfully with God. I don’t have to be happy about the situation, but I can have peace knowing that God’s pure joy can bring me through any trial. Thank you, Susan, for reminding me of this truth. Please forgive me for being so negative the past few months.”
“No need to apologize. I remember what it was like. Now, let’s go get some coffee and look for other things to be joyful about!”
Susan and Ally got up and headed to the coffee shop down the street. Susan was happy and Ally had joy for the first time in a long time. Ally would never be the same again.
