It had been a long time since he ate a good meal. Hunger filled the land - no food anywhere! In depression and sadness, his mind went to Papa.
Months ago, he had demanded his inheritance. He left home and made many pretend friends who helped him wasted his inheritance. Now he was broke and hungry.
“If I was home!” he wailed to no one in particular.
He continued trudging along. He was going home, but slowly.
On the horizon, he spotted a cottage and it seemed surrounded by many outbuildings.
“Work, a job maybe?” were his thoughts as he tapped on the door.
Success! He was now employed.
His new ‘job’ was caring for pigs. He hated pigs. It was beneath him as a Jewish man to have anything to do with them, but he was desperately hungry.
In his despair, even the pig food looked good. The farmer provided some food for the workers.
“If Papa and brother James could see me now!”
After three weeks of pig work, he had had enough; so he made the decision. He was no longer as hungry but he looked ragged and smelt horrible. Without giving any notice, he started walking in the direction of home.
This time the driving force was longing for family and for sanity to return to his life.
“I will never leave home again and I will be good to my brother too,” he vowed.
Please God, help me to stay in my place and cease wandering” was his prayer as he walked.
Prodigal son, as he is known by many Bible readers reminds me of so many of us who wander off the narrow way. These prodigals bring pain to the heart of the Lord, to parents and loved ones but are determined to indulge the hunger of our souls and flesh; so seek adventures heedlessly.
Just as the father of Prodigal waited and watched, so do many parents wait, pray and watch. They watch and pray. Even Jesus prays for us.
Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. [Romans 8:34 ESV].
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. [1 John 2:1 ESV]
Hunger for love eventually overrode the hunger for fun, so Prodigal went home. I pray the same for all prodigals.
