Her tortured thoughts became muffled sobs of despair.
How did it come to this? When will it end? Which end will I choose?
She remembered the lovely white table laden with a myriad of colorful food. Fresh fruits and vegetables displayed upon silver platters delighted the eyes. Steaming odors from chafing dishes of meats, fish, and soups tickled the nostrils. Decanters of unfermented juices and teas reflected the flickering candlelight.
Months and months of struggling to survive upon whatever was found in the alleys and backyard compost piles had left her forlorn and miserable. Her garments lacked their former beauty. Now ragged and torn, they hung loose on her frail body. Daytime wandering through the streets came with snarls and sneers from the townspeople.
She curled her arms around her body trying to capture her own warmth on this early fall night, hidden away in this abandoned hut. Even the building was forlorn and unwanted.
Winter would be here soon and no hope of food or shelter came with the season. Hopelessness set in.
She looked up through the hole in the roof. Is anyone out there? Does anyone see her? Will anyone save her?
Yesterday she had a piece of crusty bread or was it the day before? She couldn’t trust her mind anymore. Was this insanity?
She needed food and drink. Knowing the darkness would cover her movements outside, she tried to stand only to topple over and fall on the stone floor. A moan escaped her lips as she sat up. In her weakened state, walking would be impossible.
A thought from her past interrupted her consciousness. “I am the Bread of Life. Come every day to me and you will never be hungry. Believe in me and you will never be thirsty.”
Is there a God? Would a good God leave her to perish? Oh, that she could only know the truth.
As the dawn broke through the darkness, she lay there unwanted, unattended, frozen.
They found her corpse many days later. Her prone figure faced the doorway, arms reaching towards something or someone, eyes vacant but focused. A radiant smile curved her parched lips, at last.
