My mom and I went to the water’s edge to watch the boisterous kids slipping down the deck slide into the depths below. Soon, we ventured onto the dock.
It wasn’t anyone’s fault. I couldn’t swim and be a part of the fun. Along came a girl who pushed me into six feet of lake water as my mother lost her grip on my hand.
The sound of choking, sobbing, and coughing woke me from my unconsciousness. Minutes went by which seemed like eternity, before I found myself clutched in my mother’s arms.
Little did we know at the time, thirteen years later my lifesaver would be my mother-in-law.
I met my husband at the ripe old age of sixteen, married at eighteen two days after high school graduation, and my handsome son was born as I neared twenty.
Yes, my husband was also on the dock.
At twenty-seven, I found myself pregnant again after a failed vasectomy.
“You need to get rid of it. We don’t want any more children. One is enough.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because God made this baby out of the two of us and I will not destroy life.”
He finally accepted my refusal. Seven months later our daughter appeared. She was the first girl in two generations and a great joy in his life!
As I reflect upon my past, I see God’s hand in everything. Two failed businesses, estrangement from my husband’s family but He saw us through. The good times were filled with love, friendship, and family. We were living in the blessings of a successful business and ideal jobs.
So what would have happened if I had drowned? No marriage. No son. No daughter. No granddaughters. No salvation for my unsaved husband. No life.
I wouldn’t have written a book nor created pictures. No vacations at the Outer Banks or live to see my daughter married.
What has been, I would have never known.
But the Lord, He is good and His mercies endure forever. He had a purpose and a plan that would not be thwarted for that five-year-old child…me.
“Nothing would be, were it not for He.”
