A summons came from the king. Not just any summons…a royal edict. Why, after all these years, would he consider me? Could it be more vengeance upon my family? Will I even return home? All these questions and no answers until…today.
Armed guards swung wide the massive oak doors. I remembered the carvings from when I was a young lad. To keep me entertained, my nurse would let me trace the outlines with my fingers. We fled for our lives the last time we exited through these doors.
I peered into the room hoping to discern the atmosphere and read the faces of the hierarchy to see which way the pendulum swung. Should I fear? There could be no other explanation of why I was called to be here today.
It had been a long time since I saw the Great Hall. I remembered the massive table that seemed to stretch for miles but in reality it is much shorter. More food than I believe I have ever seen, decorated the table!
The dignitaries were seated around staring at me as if I had interrupted a grand joke. In their hands were cups of drink, poised halfway to their mouths. They considered my meager attire and mode of arrival. Then, returned to their dining, dismissing the distraction.
Candle flames illuminated the opulent gold that overlaid the walls, dinnerware, and swords of the guards. The elegant dress of the guests shimmered as they moved. Yet, here I am, just a poor crippled outcast.
A royal attendant came toward me and asked my name. As he turned away, he motioned us to follow him as he led us to the dais.
There was the king, the mighty warrior who had killed his tens of thousands. My hands clutched the covering over my legs exposing my trepidation and fear. Closer and closer we moved until the royal attendant signaled to stop.
My eyes were riveted upon the man seated on the golden throne. I had heard the stories of the hero. I knew the controversy surrounding his appointment to be the heir. I knew that he was chosen by God. As I slid from the stretcher, I fell on my face and prostrated in front of him.
King David said, “Mephibosheth.”
“Here is your servant!” I replied.
The king said, “Do not fear, for I will surely show kindness to you for the sake of your father Jonathan, and will restore to you all the land of your grandfather Saul; and you shall eat at my table regularly.”
Again I prostrated myself and said, “What is your servant that you should regard a dead dog like me?”
The king explained to my attendant all was to be restored to me. How could this be? He even wants me to eat at his table as one of his sons!
Imagine me, the poor crippled grandson of a dead king to dine at the king’s table as a son.
Oh, the kindness of the king to honor the memory of his friend. Overwhelmed at the news, I sat at his table. The linen covering hid my deformity so that I resembled the gathered princes and guests.
I readied myself to hear what I didn’t know….the life stories of my father and his beloved openhanded friend.
