Who is this looking back at me?
This damaged little girl,
This woman longing to be free
From living in what used to be.

It’s cold down in this valley.
Shadows of doubt surround my feet
Like dense fog creeping in.
It’s cold living in what used to be.

Many paths are set before me.
I seem to know what each one holds.
I know, too, which way to go
Away from what used to be…..

But why do I feel such doubt,
When the way out
Is illuminated with red words?
It’s the way to who I am supposed to be.

Summer turns to Winter in the valley.
I remain stalled in front of my choices.
Listening to the echoes of long-ago voices.
My feet are sluggish, and my jaw is clinched
I want to punch something with my fist!

Angry at myself
For being such a coward.
Longing for what I can see
But doing nothing about it.

Watching as the sun shines upon the Mountain,
And Spring flowers bloom.
I can almost smell their sweet aroma
Down here in the valley.

I want so badly to move,
Just to take that first step.
Move! I say Move!
Away from what used to be…

The fog starts to retreat
Rolling away from me.
I realize that I am on the path
To what could be
To what should be
To what is supposed to be...

I am still afraid
But moving just the same
Out of the valley,
And along the path where the light shines.
Leaving behind living in what used to be
So many beautiful things I can now see!

Enjoyed your poem. Good lessen in moving on and not getting stuck in wishing things were like they used to be. Blessings!

I've heard a saying that it is the most fertile in a valley. So, that's saying that when we are in that valley, that's the time when we grow the most. So true!
