All the liquid had drained out and the fruit was dry and cracked. It was no longer suitable. ‘A can of worms’ I thought; certainly not usable fruit!
Momentarily, tears welled up in my eyes. I had to make a quick trip to the supermarket and buy a new tin, which I inspected before I paid for it.
The cake story took me to another important incident that happened in the life of a friend. Her name was Jill and she had met this ‘great guy’ at work. He took an interest in her and became her handsome suitor. His name was Jonas.
They hung out together a lot and gradually she developed a plan in her heart.
“We would make a great pair; like a perfect cake” she told her friends.
He not only looked good but he was friendly, well liked, educated and owned his own apartment. A recipe for a perfect husband, but somehow Jill knew in her heart that she had to look deeper. She had to open the ‘can’.
Wisdom demanded that she added one more vital ingredient; which was faith in Christ. Jonas was not a Christian. Over time, as he opened his heart to her she realised that he was an atheist.
As a child, she had grown up in a Christian home and went to church frequently, had given her life to the Lord and learned this verse.
‘Do not be unequally yoked to unbelievers’
{2 Corinthians 3:14 NIV}
Despite the fact that she had strayed into a backslidden lifestyle, Jill knew she could not and should not marry Jonas if she wanted to be happy. She repented and spent time praying. She knew that the ‘can’ had to be thrown away.
‘Back to the drawing board’ she thought. The only fix for this was separation. It was a ‘no go’.

I really feel like this could have been made into more of a story, with the focus being on the relationship. Take the POV of the friend, and actually tell the story. I think that might be more effective.
The analogy is a good one, and a good reminder.
