“It was best that way”, she thought. That morning in her quiet time she asked: “Lord, deliver me from evil, lead me not into temptation and please make me brave”.
In a house three miles away Kathy was also ready for the day. She was anticipating this day and this school because life at home was hell. In her last school she had made friends and some enemies too, but sadly her parents had divorced. Mom had not smiled since and Dad was in jail.
Similar stories pervaded this group of high school girls. Some like Savi were in stable homes while others like Kathy were not. Within two weeks into the term, three subgroups had formed. There were the ‘troublemakers or extroverts’ who consistently spoke up, and often negatively. Another group were the ‘soloists’ who travelled alone and were mainly introverted. A third group were the smiling honeydew girls who seemed to have inner peace.
Some of the teachers had mentally classified the students by their behaviour, their compliance with rules and their predictability.
“The three categories help us to manage the class better if we recognise the clues when trouble is about to start” drawled Mr Smith in the staffroom.
“And how best to avoid acceleration” others voiced in unison.
“Some students stand out positively, I think” Mr Pike spoke out.
“Yes, Savi is special,” said Mrs Jones with a smile. “Her grades are excellent, she follows orders and school rules, hands in her assignments on time and presentations are always so neat!”
“I think she is a Christian” voiced PE teacher Charlie Dean to himself. “ Don't ask me how I know, I just know.”
One day about halfway through the term, they were all on the playing field when Kathy fell down and started screaming in agony. All the students flocked to her side. It seemed that she had broken her arm. While they waited for the emergency services, Savi knelt down beside her and started praying out loud in Jesus name.
“Now, there is a clue,” thought Mr Dean as he gently spoke comfort words to his distressed students.
In the ER, an x-ray showed a complicated fracture that would require close medical attention for some time. So Kathy was hospitalised. She was in trouble. Her mother was distressed.
In great kindness, Savi visited her daily and each time would audibly pray for her. After a few days, Kathy voiced to her nurse with a smile,
“My arm no longer hurts!”
A repeat x-ray was ordered. It showed that her arm was no longer fractured. She was healed.
James 5:15:- "And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven."
When Kathy returned to school, it was two weeks after the event. She was different somehow. She and Savi became best friends, went to church together and she became a Christian.
On reflection, the clues to Savi’s faith in Christ was seen in her love in action.
Mark 12:31 ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
