Glasses and hearing aids compensate for the loss common to aging that has affected my eyes and ears. I recently thought about the fact that if I was living before their invention, I might not be able to manage on my own. But I miss the soothing internal waterfall sound that was lost when hearing aids began amplifying the cacophony of sound all around me.
Those of us who need hearing aids are aware of a distinct difference between sound and noise. It’s like the difference between a plant and a weed. Someone said, “A weed is a plant that makes a gardener unhappy.” Hearing aids amplify intruding, unwanted background noise. That makes me unhappy because it interferes with conversation.
So, what about spiritual hearing aids? My greatest happiness is hearing God, even when I am not happy with what I’m hearing. I am simply grateful to hear Him. What I hear from Him is never noise. But what He says to me is often hard to understand because of the external and internal noise in my head.
I don’t hear God with my physical ears but I do hear Him often speaking to me through my pastor, through my sister, through a friend. His Spirit whispers to my spirit and I eagerly listen and take note.
He most often speaks to me through His written Word. I sometimes need to ask people to write what they are saying if I am not sure of what I am hearing. God has given me His words in writing and patiently repeats Himself if I ask.
Like young Samuel, I may misunderstand at first who is calling, but with help from the aids God has provided, I am eager to respond, “Here I am, Lord, I am listening.”

A shrill noise startles me awake. Groaning, I fumble around trying to find my glasses. I squint at the clock. <i>Grrrr, it's only six-thirty! What type of fool calls that early? Oh I bet it's that pesky telemarketer again. <i> (the <i> would make italics in html, which indicates thoughts) Finally, I find my glasses, plop them down on my noise, and look at the caller ID. "Oh dear, I wonder what's wrong with my friend. Of course she's on the east coast so maybe..." I put the phone to my ear and cover my heart with my hand. I hadn't realized I'd been holding my breath so when I said, "Hello," it came out with a huge gasp.
I know I did a bit of rewriting, but sometimes it's easier to see what I mean with an example. Using body language, thoughts, and dialog can really help a scene to pop more.
I sense you have a delightful sense of humor, so I also wanted to expand on that a bit more. Even in a devotional, it's great to use the gift of humor that God clearly gave to you. Your message is a good one. I also think you were a bit outside of the box too, which is always great too.
