I have a mental picture of taking any cares or baggage and laying them down at Jesus’ feet knowing that He can best deal with them. It is of course not as easy as it sounds.
Living a carefree life sounds easy but the reality is different because it is a daily task of trust. We hold on to so much..and panic if we lose things we value.
An example may be this story of a family who lost their baggage at a most inconvenient time.
The family set out in time to catch their flight.
Grandma’s funeral was scheduled for a few days after arrival.
“This should be easy,” said Papa confidently. “We have a one-stop flight to London, what can possibly go wrong?” he smiled as they entered the check-in line.
The first indication of trouble came when after checking in, a flashing sign stated that the first leg of the journey was delayed by sudden snowfall in Atlanta.
June felt her heart sink. They needed to find an alternative route home or delay the funeral. “We have to get there on time,” she said in dismay.
The helpful flight attendants were dealing with many who needed to get going. Eventually, they found them a flight schedule which would go to London via Newfoundland and Paris.
In their haste to get going, they did not consider the logistics of luggage. They assumed that the suitcases would be sent with them. What a shock when the exhausted family arrived in London to find that there was no luggage for them on the luggage belt.
Papa, June and the children made baggage claims using the UK address. They drove to Suffolk very disappointed.
For they had nothing with them except hand luggage and that did not contain clothing; so they arrived minus underwear, change of clothes or shoes.
In the ensuing day before the funeral, they had to quickly purchase items to wear for the funeral. With apologies, Papa attended his mother’s funeral wearing what he wore for the flight.
Can this example of humans who had lost their ‘baggage’ be seen as an example or as a revelation to us?
Would you be distressed if you lost your cares and would you seek them once they were gone?
Children are often described as carefree and so should we also; we are after all ‘Children of God’. So if you lose your luggage or your baggage; be joyful and make that a daily goal!
