Havoc was wreaked on land and on the sea; she was an enemy and we had to put our armour on.
Neighborhoods shuttered windows, wooden and metal; whatever was available.
Emergency supplies were collected. We listened and watched non stop television news; it plagued our ears. The headlines said 'doom'.
Uninterrupted coverage, or so it seems. We held our national breath and awaited the brutal kiss.
Valuables were stored in sealed plastic boxes because we had seen the ‘Texas hit’. That was a category 4. It had left homes under water and citizens weeping, distressed and shocked.
We were prepared to fear. This unknown, this lady, this Irma was a 5. Her sweeping swirling skirts of screaming wind gusts and loud thunder created terror in our hearts. On and on she came! Mercilessly she headed for Florida.
East coast or West coast?
No one was sure!
We prayed without ceasing. We made and received family calls. They were worried for our safety.
"Get out," Mother pleaded "or go to a shelter!"
Many left and travelled north.
When Irma finally came we had bunkered down in a safe inner room. She was surprisingly brief and smaller than anticipated. A category 2, we later heard, but her whistling winds had done her job. We had been terrorized but we were all safe.
So now it was over!
Fences were broken down.
Roof tiles were lost.
Weak branches were broken off and spread everywhere.
Many had electricity while others had none. So out came the grills and on came the generators and many many smiles. People shared ice and others shared food while being thankful; yes, ever so thankful that we were now safe - until the next storm.
In life, we have storms. Like Irma, they bombard us and fill us with unwanted thoughts, but as children of God, we can choose how we respond. When Jesus was in a storm he was unafraid. When the storm hit his boat he had total peace and was asleep.
Storms stretch our faith in God. Do we entrust ourselves to Him and let His Spirit in us fill us with His peace that passes understanding?
And as Paul said *
“Therefore, put on the complete armor of God, so that you will be able to [successfully] resist and stand your ground in the evil day [of danger], and having done everything [that the crisis immovable, demands], to stand firm [in your place, fully prepared, victorious]"
