I bolted out from my cozy bed,
Doggone it, I’d overslept.
I scrambled around to find my clothes,
Feeling completely inept.
While finding my way to the bathroom,
I stubbed my toe and fell.
I tried to get up then bumped my head,
Bit my lip trying not to yell!
As I entered the little dark room,
I reached to turn on the light.
I knocked my toothbrush into the toilet,
This day wasn’t looking so bright!
I managed to fix my makeup and hair,
Sufficient for the day ahead.
I searched for my keys and went out the door,
Facing the day with dread.
Tried as I might, to remain positive,
My car started with a turn of the key.
But to my dismay in my rear view mirror,
A policeman was signaling me.
With ticket in hand, I headed for work,
Ever mindful of the merciless clock.
I pulled in to park, having missed my shuttle,
So now in the rain I would walk.
With coffee in hand, I sat at my desk,
Preparing for an unsure day.
I opened my calendar and tried not to yelp.
My report was due yesterday!
Thankfully spared and given more time,
I made it through the morning with ease.
Realizing at lunch, I was running a fever,
And started to cough and sneeze.
As the day lingered on, I barely could move,
All I could think of was home.
To crawl in my bed and pull up the covers...
I woke up to my desk telephone.
It was my boss on the other line,
Calling me in for a chat.
“You’re report wasn’t done and you’re falling asleep!”
I couldn’t argue with that.
I did my best to explain all to him,
The misfortune my day had been dealt.
To my relief he said, “Accidents happen.”
And he understood how I felt.
On top of that, he sent me home.
I was thankful I didn’t get fired.
I was able to shuttle and get to my car,
But I still felt so awfully tired.
I finally pulled into my drive,
After a wreck had caused a delay.
I walked in my house and crawled into bed.
Happily bidding “Adieu” to this day!
